Xmas celebrated

Christmas

The Christian community of the country, as elsewhere across the world, celebrated Christmas on Wednesday, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

According to Christian belief, God appeared on earth through his son, Jesus Christ, on this day.

Christmas, the biggest religious festival of the Christian community, is a celebration of rebirth, new beginning, forgiveness and peace, and renewing relationship with God and humans.

The celebrations started on the eve of the day with singing of carols in public places like lobbies, restaurants and lounges.

Marking the carnival, Christians offered special prayers at churches.

On the occasion, the prayer houses and adjoining areas were decked out with colourful tiny blinking lights. Illuminated Christmas trees were placed with a star standing right on top while Santa Claus handed out Christmas gifts to the children on the occasion.

Special dishes were prepared in the families of members of the community and the children sought blessings from the elders.

The day was a public holiday.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia greeted members of the Christian community on the occasion.

President Abdul Hamid accorded a reception to the members of Christian community at Bangabhaban on the occasion.
