“Would have nationalised education”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said that her government would have nationalised all educational institutions had the country’s economy been strong enough.

She said this while addressing a function, in Tungipara upazila headquarters, to felicitate and award scholarships to those students of Gopalganj district who got GPA-5 in SSC, HSC and equivalent exams in 2012.

Gopalganj Samity Dhaka organised the function at the Bangabandhu Mazar Complex.

 

Hasina said, “Bangabandhu made girls’ education free Now we’re providing stipends to 40 percent students up to the secondary level. With enough financial strength, we would have nationalised all the educational institutions up to the Masters level and made it free.”

She said that the government recently nationalised 26,193 primary schools and the jobs of 104,000 teachers across the country.

The Prime Minister said that as many as 1,624 non-government educational institutions were brought under the monthly payment order (MPO) facility.

In a bid to eliminate disparity in education between the rural and urban areas, she said that modern model schools and computer and science labs were set up in 306 upazilas where there were no government schools Information service centres have been set up in 4,553 union councils.

She also urged all concerned to ensure that autistic and physically-challenged children had equal opportunities in education and quota in to educational institutions.

A total 660 students were given reception and scholarship at the function for their academic feat.

Awami League Presidium Council Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan also addressed the function.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Home Minister MK Alamgir, State Ministers Munnujan Sufian, Shamsul Haque Tuku, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury were present at the function, which was presided over by the President of Gopalganj Samity, Sheikh Kabir Hossain.

Earlier, the Prime Minister paid tributes to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his mazar here this morning.

After laying the wreaths, she stood in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of respect to the memory of the great leader.
