Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad on Wednesday assured Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of standing by the government during ‘bad times’.
Ershad’s assurance came amid the opposition alliance’s agitation programmes demanding restoration of a neutral caretaker body to oversee the national elections and seeking ouster of the government.
“In near future, you (Hasina) alone will not be able to tackle all problems. The people are with you and so am I,” he said at a programme held after the inauguration of the Zillur Rahman (Mirpur-Airport) Flyover.
After he joined the Awami League-led alliance, the Jatiya Party chief had been complaining that his expectations were not fulfilled. The party activists were expecting that Ershad would be made the President, a hope that was never fulfilled.
As the government completed its third year in office, the former President said that he would ‘leave the coalition’ and asked his followers to be ‘patient’. At a discussion on Tuesday, he told his supporters that the Jatiya Party would have to leave the ruling coalition. “We will inform of our decision at the right time,” he said.
A day later, Ershad assured Hasina of his support.
The Jatiya Party Chairman was present at the flyover inauguration programme as the local MP.
