Obaidul Quader says he will retain his own ‘style’ as a minister.
The Communication Minister said he wants to continue working in his own distinct way, a day after Awami League General Secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam accused him of being a ‘showoff’.
He was exchanging greetings with officials of Roads and Highways Department on Wednesday.
Syed Ashraful Islam, in a dig at Quader during an event at the Secretariat, had said that it is not the ministers to job to do what he does.
“If the central concern is to clap and jump around for the media, then we too can go and visit bridges and culverts every day,” Ashraf had said.
Obaidul Quader, who was also in charge of Communication in Awami League’s previous term, is a regular sight at bridges, culverts, train and bus stations where he interacts with the media about works in progress.
About his plans with the ministry in this term, Quader said : “People of Bangladesh like my style of work. I work in my own style despite some who think that I am jumping around.”
Quader said he has an instinct for understanding what people think and like.
“I don’t go to these places to exhibit my face. I go there to see construction of roads and bridges. Journalists don’t do coverage in exchange of anything, they show the work.”
He said he will continue with his approach and not pay heed to spoilers.
“I will go to see roads, bridges, to check on vehicles and wherever else necessary. I will do all this even more, and go all over Bangladesh,” said the Communication Minister.
He said the people don’t believe or want to hear what ministers have to say, they want to see them at work.
“I want to change the notion that ministers just make promises and do not work.”
Quader who got office at the end of previous term was visible in taking proactive steps against irregularities.
The minister was seen stopping and rebuking BRTC bus drivers on the road. He also slapped a rail worker while he was in charge of the railway ministry.
Quader said he will implement some tough decisions in days to come.
“I will work to implement these decisions from today. These includes reducing traffic jams, accidents and removing illegal encroachments.”
He also said the work to construct the main infrastructure of Padma Bridge will start in June. Projects like the elevated expressway and metrorail will also be start soon.
