‘We don’t want this democracy’

The veteran lawyer slams government

Veteran lawyer Rafiq-ul Huq has condemned recent government actions against main opposition BNP in regard to the Dhaka March programme.

“Blocking roads with trucks, is this democracy?” he argued on Monday, referring to the “security” measures at the Gulshan residence of BNP chief Khaleda Zia.

“If this is democracy, then we don’t want this democracy,” Huq said.

The veteran lawyer was speaking after attending the Namaz-e-Janaza of senior lawyer AKM Nazrul Islam, who died on Saturday, at the apex court premises..

BNP, who will not be joining the January 5 national polls, called the Dhaka March programme to press home their demand for polls to be held under a non-partisan government.

“What was the crime in letting them hold the Dhaka March?” Rafiq-ul Huq said. “If BNP wants to join polls, the elections should be deferred.”

“Everyone is against the January 5 elections. Only the Awami League is determined to hold the polls,” he said.

He condemned the Sunday attack on pro-BNP lawyers in the Supreme Court premises. “If the prime minister has ordered such an attack, then the days of the Supreme Court are over.”

Rafiq also condemned what he called foreign intervention in the internal matters of Bangladesh, a sovereign country.
