War trial judges risking life, says PM

Expresses satisfaction over Ghulam Azam verdict

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the judges who are holding trial for war crimes are working amid life risks “in face of national and international pressure”.

“And this is a big achievement for the nation,” the premier said while reacting to judgement on former Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam at the parliament Tuesday.

She expressed satisfaction over conviction of Azam, who masterminded crimes against humanity, genocide and other wartime offences in 1971 to oppose the birth of Bangladesh.

“We are satisfied with the tribunal’s verdict whatever it is. We don’t want to say anything about the verdict. What the punishment should be is the matter of the court,” the prime minister said.

Her comments came during her concluding speech in the budget session at the parliament, a day after a tribunal in Dhaka sentenced Ghulam Azam to 90 years in prison for his role during the Liberation War.

She called upon the opposition leader Khaleda Zia to work for the protection of women’s rights severing ties with Hefajat-e Islam leader Allama Shafi.

Earlier on July 13, the premier came down heavily on Shafi for his derogatory and indecent remarks about women.
