State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam on Saturday said it will not be possible to foil the ongoing trial of the 1971 war criminals by giving the evil eye.

Addressing an international conference titled ‘Global Impact of War Crimes Justice Process in Bangladesh’, at Cirdap auditorium, he said, “Anyone giving the evil eye on the 1971 war crimes trial cannot obstruct it  as we’re capable to carry on it despite all the hostilities.”

The junior minister also noted that the sentence awarded to one of the condemned war crimes convicts is awaiting the execution. We’ll execute the verdict as soon as possible.”

Referring to the trial process of the 1971 war crimes, he said most countries in the world except a few lobbyists appointed by the war crimes accused have praised the ongoing trial of the war crimes taking place in Bangladesh.

Speaking on the occasion, South Asia Democratic Forum (SADF) executive director Paulo Casaca also mentioned the controversial report of Human Rights Watch (HRW), a New York-based rights body, and said it ‘lacks objectivity’ in Bangladesh perspective.

He said HRW’s one-sided criticism of the authorities in Egypt provided support to Muslim Brotherhood and backed Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh.

Casaca described as lopsided role of HRW played over the trial process of war crimes in Bangladesh as if it acted ‘for the criminal and against justice.”

Organised by Bangladesh Heritage Foundation, the inaugural session of the international conference was presided over by Foundation chairman Waliur Rahman.
