Voter figure ‘mismatch’

The Election Commission, however, claims that the database figure prepared by them is correct.

According to the National Identity Registration Wing, Bangladesh has 91,948,224 voters following an update. But voter information gathered by local officers across the country puts the number at 91,493,319 – a difference of 454,905.

Election Commission Secretary Muhammed Sadique said: “The information at the national database of the National Identity Registration Wing about the number of voter is correct.”

“The information given by district and Upazila officers is wrong. There is no scope to question information at the national database,” he added.

The Secretary said measures had been taken against a Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission for giving information showing the number of voters 0.5 million more than the actual figure in February this year.

The National Identity Registration Wing provided the EC with the information about voter numbers updated until Tuesday.

According to the summary signed by the wing’s Assistant Director Mohammad Alam, total voters are 91,948,224 –46,111,547 of them male and 45,836,677 female.

With the general election on the horizon, the Election Commission Secretariat sought a list of polling centres from its field-level officers.

The officers already sent information about 36,954 polling centres in 300 constituencies.

Officials at the EC Secretariat said data sent by the field-level officers suggest there are 91,492,319 voters in the country – 46,156,990 males and 45,861,780 females.
