Tulip Siddiq gets Labour Party nomination for UK polls

Tulip Siddiq, granddaughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and daughter of Sheikh Rehana, has got nomination of the  opposition Labour Party from the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency for the United Kingdom’s next general election to be held in 2015.

 

The nomination was decided through local polls on Monday.

 

“Thank you for selecting me as your candidate for 2015. I’m honoured to fight with you to keep H+K Labour in 2015!,” she tweeted after the nomination.

 

Her tweeter account was seen flooded with congratulation messages. In reply, Tulip said, “Thank you so much to everyone for the wonderful messages and calls, which have broken my phone!”

 

Camden Councillor and Community and Culture Cabinet Member, Tulip Siddiq had two other competitors – another Camden Councillor Sally Gimson and Deputy Mayor of Hackny Bara Sophie Linden – for the nomination.

 

Tulip Siddiq, daughter of Shafiq Siddiq and Sheikh Rehana, studied English literature for her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the University College of London.

 

She did a second Master’s in Politics, Policy and Government before pursuing a career in British politics.

 

According to her personal websites, Tulip pledged to ensure that Labour members’ voices are heard in both the Camden side and Brent side of the constituency and continue her track record of campaigning both locally and nationally. “I’ll also work hard to ensure that Labour wins more council seats in 2014 in both boroughs.”

 

She also pledged to build a coalition in the community by bringing together community groups, trade unionists and residents to stand up against the Tory led government.
