TORTURE TO DEATH: Rakib’s intestine, lungs burst

Rakib, the 12-year boy killed in torture in Khulna on Monday, dies as his intestine and lungs burst because of pumping air through the rectum, post-mortem examination of the boy found.
Khulna Medical College Hospital superintendent Prashanta Kumar on Wednesday confirmed the report of the post-mortem conducted at the hospital on Tuesday.
Rakib was allegedly tortured by his former employer Mintu Mian, a garage owner and garage caretaker Sharif Ahmed on Monday evening as Rakib had switched to another garage on July 1. He succumbed to the injury at about 10:30pm on Monday, when an ambulance carrying him just left Khulna Medical College Hospital for Dhaka.
The police on Tuesday sought Beauty Begum, one of the three accused caught by the local people and handed over to police on Monday night, to be remaded in custody for 10 days for interrogation in the murder case filed by Rakib’s father Mohammod Alam.
Beauty, also Shairf’s mother, was present at the garage during the torture.
The petition is likely to be heard today, said the investigation officer of the case, Khulna sadar police station sub-inspector Kazi Moshtaque Ahmed.
Khulna Metropolitan Police commissioner Nibash Chandra Majhi formed a three-member committee to closely monitor the investigation into the case.
Headed by the additional commissioner Md Mahbub Hakim, the committee included additional deputy commissioner Sheikh Moniruzzaman Mithu and assistant commissioner Humayun Kabir.
Mahbub, while visiting Rakib’s house at Tootpara in the city at about 10am on Wednesday told New Age that the charge-sheet in the case would be submitted shortly as all the three accused were arrested soon after the minor boy succumbed to the injuries on Monday night.
Khulna divisional commissioner MA Samad and the deputy commissioner Md Mostafa Kamal visited the victim family on Wednesday and assured them of ensuring fair investigation and trial of the case in the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
They also assured Lucky Begum, mother of Rakib, of providing her with a job for earning livelihood.
Speakers at two human chains demanded exemplary punishment for the killers of Rakib. They also demanded that the case must be tried in a special tribunal.
The human chains were organised by Human Rights Enforcement Committee in Picture Palace intersection and Child Forum of Jagrata Juba Shangha in front of Rupsha Multipurpose High School in the city.
The human chains were attended by hundreds of people including Rakib’s parents and only sister, Mim, 8.
Addressing the human chain, Mim, in tears appealed to the authorities for justice for the killing of her only brother.
