Thousands affected in Patuakhali Over 100 injured in different upazilas

A tree fell on a tin-shed house during Cyclone Mahasen at Golachipa in Patuakhali on Thursday.

At least 100 people were injured and thousands affected in different upazilas of Patuakhali as the Cyclone Mahasen hit the district.

Over 100 people were injured during the cyclonic surge between 7:00am and 10:00am in Rangabali upazila, said upazila nirbahi officer Md Liakat Ali.

Shanti Ranjan Bouddha, district relief and rehabilitation officer, said at least 70,419 people were affected, 7,540 houses destroyed and 18,238 houses damaged partially in the cyclone on Thursday, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.

The official said during the surge of the cyclone, 109,332 people took shelter in 298 shelters in the district.

Tk 992,500 lakh and 190 metric tonnes of rice have been disbursed among the cyclone-hit people in the area, Ranjan added.

The authorities were able to provide electricity services at a limited scale at 6:10pm in the Patuakhali town but the services remain snapped elsewhere in the district since Wednesday night, the correspondent said.

The district met office has recorded 243 millimetres (mm) of rainfall between Wednesday night and 12:00pm Thursday.

Robi crops on nearly 50,000 hectares of land have completely been destroyed and around 200 fish enclosures went into flood water.

Road communication with the rest of the country remains suspended as a platoon of Hazipur ferry ghat on Patuakhali-Kuakata road had been submerged by flood water.

There were no rain since noon, the correspondent reports.
