Tailbacks snarl in between blockades

Unusual tailbacks were seen on different highways and roads across the country, including the capital, on Friday as large numbers of vehicles took to the streets after a straight 131-hour road-rail-waterway blockade.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced the blockade on November 30 that ended at 5pm on Thursday. The opposition combine is set to enforce another spell 72-hour blockade at 6am Saturday.

During the blockade period, people remained almost confined to their houses and the weekend came as a relief for them as they came out of their houses on Friday.

In the capital, people got stuck in long gridlocks in Jatrabari, Sayedabad, Sadarghat, Mohakhali, Farmgate, Gabtali, Mirpur, Kalyanpur, Science Lab and Asad Gate areas due to heavy pressure of vehicles on the streets, causing sufferings to the city dwellers.

Meanwhile, Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Tangail highways saw unusual traffic snarls.

UNB Comilla correspondent reports: Thousands of passengers got stranded on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway as a 50-km tailback was created due to huge traffic flow.

Police said vehicular movement came to a halt from Mynamati to Daudkandi on the highway since morning due to the pressure of several thousand vehicles.

Officer-in-charge of Daudkandi highway police station Mizanur Rahman said a large number of vehicles took to the highway as the 18-party alliance is set to enforce another spell of 72-hour blockade after a break of only 37 hours.

In Tangail, thousands of passengers suffered a 70-km tailback Dhaka- Tangail Highway, also caused by heavy pressure of vehicles.

The traffic jam was created from Pakullah of Mirzapur upazila to Chandra of Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur on the highway, causing sufferings to passengers.
