Sujan pushes for 3-yr membership to contest polls

Sushashaner Jonya Nagorik (Sujan), a non-government organisation, on Sunday urged the government not to scrap the mandatory provision for an individual to have at least a three-year membership of a political party to contest the general election from the party.

The parliamentary standing committee on Law Ministry has proposed dropping the provision from the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

If the provision is ditched, any person will be eligible to run the national election from a political party even deserting his party just before the 10th parliamentary elections.

Expressing concern over the move, Sujan (Citizen for good governance) said if the provision is removed from the RPO, it will intensify the unhealthy competition, the money game, the influence of black money and nomination business in the election.

The absence of the provision will augment criminalisaiton in the political arena and even it make Parliament as a club of businessmen, the organisation that works for good governance feared.

The NGO also demanded inclusion of ‘No’ vote provision in the RPO, which was removed from the RPO in 2009.

Sujan urged Parliament to provide authority to the Election Commission to suspend or cancel election results in case of vote rigging and anomalies, a press release signed by its president M Hafizuddin Khan and secretary Badiul Alam Majumder.
