SQC Trial: BNP’s reaction after verdict

BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Monday said their party will come up with its formal reaction after the verdict to be delivered in the war crimes case against its leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

“We’ll wait until the verdict is delivered. Our party’s reaction will be given after the verdict,” he said.

Moudud made the remarks as journalists approached him after attending a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.

Earlier in the day, the ATM Fazle Kabir, chairman of International Crimes Tribuanl-1, said the tribunal will deliver its verdict tomorrow (Tuesday) on war crimes accused and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

This will be the first verdict against any BNP leader on war crimes charges.

On April 4 last year, the tribunal indicted Salauddin Quader for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War on 23 counts under different provisions of section 3 (2) of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973.

The charges include abduction and murdering of civilians, collaborating with the Pakistani occupation army to kill and torture unarmed people, genocide, looting of valuables and torching of houses and other properties, persecuting people on religious and political grounds, and committing atrocities on Hindus in Chittagong district.

Addressing the discussion, Moudud said the government has created the political deadlock over the next general election by amending the constitution. “Now they must take initiatives for resolving the crisis.”

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Bhumiheen Dal arranged the discussion styled ‘The national politics. Where is its destination?’

Reiterating BNP’s stance on not to join polls under a partisan government, the former law minister said, “We want to tell the Prime Minster that she will be forced to arrange the election under a non-party government by amending the constitution and BNP will participate in that election.”
