Speaker to perform President’s duty until Zillur’s recovery

Dhaka, Mar 14 (UNB) – Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate will perform President Zillur Rahman’s duty until the ailing President recovers.
Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told UNB over telephone on Thursday night that Speaker Abdul Hamid will carry out the duty of the President until he returns home from Singapore after his medical treatment and resumes his charge.
Mosharraf Hossain said the decision was taken today (Thursday) and the Cabinet Division issued a notification to this effect in the evening.
Replying to a question, Mosharraf said the Speaker of Parliament can take over as acting president when the President becomes ill or stays abroad as mentioned in Clause 54 of the Charter.
President Zillur Rahman is now undergoing treatment in Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital, one of the leading hospitals in the South-east Asian country.
A Bangabhaban release earlier in the day said, “The health condition of the President has improved further in the last 24 hours.”
It said Zillur’s heart is functioning normally with the improvement in his lung infection treatment. “His kidneys are also functioning normally following dialysis.”
The President has been under treatment of specialist physicians at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. He was admitted to the Singapore hospital on Monday morning.
Zillur was first admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka with respiratory problems on Saturday night.
