Sitakunda violence: 4 cases filed against 3,000 oppn men

Still long tailback on Ctg-Dhaka highway

Four cases were filed on Sunday against some 3,000 activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance in connection with Saturday’s violence in Sitakunda upazila.

Police filed the cases with Sitakunda Police Station accusing the opposition men of attacking cops, torching and vandalising vehicles and exploding bombs during a clash.

On Saturday evening, at least 25 people were injured, 10 with bullets, as local BNP activists clashed with police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in Sitakunda upazila headquarters.

During the clash, police fired rubber bullets, lobbed teargas shells and charged batons on the BNP activists.

In retaliation, the BNP men vandalised 10-12 vehicles and set fire to 10/12 others, disrupting vehicular movement on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

The unruly opposition activists also vandalised 40 vehicles and put up barricades at Fauzdarhat, Barabkundu, Kumira, Botola and Banubazar, creating a long tailback on the busy highway.

The vehicular movement on the highway did not return to normalcy till Sunday afternoon.

Hundreds of vehicles still got stuck in a 60-km tailback from City Gate of Chittagong to Mirersharai.
