Shahbagh youths brought out a procession to celebrate the death penalty awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for wartime offences during the country’s 1971 Liberation War.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death finding him guilty five out of seven charges brought against him were proved.
Hearing the news around 2:00pm, several hundreds of people regardless of their age and sex brought out the procession from Shahbagh around 2:15pm and marched towards the central Shaheed Minar in the capital.
The cheerful processionists were chanting slogans “Joy Bangla”, “Jonotar joy holo” (people have won), and “Shahbagh-er joy holo” (Shahbagh has won).
They returned to Shahbagh around 3:00pm.
People Wednesday evening started gathering at Shahbagh, the venue of weeks of demonstration organised to demand maximum punishment for all war criminals.
The Gonojagoron Mancha was formed immediately after a tribunal had handed down life imprisonment to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah on February 5.
