Series of blasts in Dhaka during strike

A crude bomb exploded on the premises of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court during the opposition alliance’s 36-hour shutdown demanding the release of its leaders.

Police say two more crude bombs exploded near the Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor’s office, and one each in Fakirarpool and Gulistan in the city.

The law keepers detained three suspects from the Jagannath University area and another from the Dhaka Court area after the explosions.

A lawyer Mahbub Hasan Rana said that a handmade bomb went off on the stairs of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s chamber in the afternoon.

A suspected youth named Mizan, 20, was nabbed from the spot following the incident. Mizan is the son of Jamshed Mondol of Mymensingh.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Dhaka Court Police Outpost Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com that they were preparing to lodge a case at the Kotwali Police Station under the Explosives Act.

Meanwhile, two crude bombs were detonated in front of the Jagannath University VC’s office at around 3:45pm.

Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Kotwali Circle) Jamal Pasha said that no one was injured in the blasts.

He said three youths were detained from near the VC’s office following the blasts and they were being quizzed at the Kotwali Police Station.
