SC halts Quader Molla’s execution at last minute

In a dramatic development, war crimes convict Abdul Quader Molla’s execution has been halted until 10:30am Wednesday.

Chief defence counsel Abdur Razzaq told bdnews24.com Tuesday evening, “The sentence has been stayed until 10:30am tomorrow.”

The Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court gave the order when they moved him, he added.

Supreme Court Registrar AKM Shamsul Islam also told bdnews24.com that the order to halt Molla’s execution had been passed by the Chamber Judge.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, however, told bdnews24.com that he was not aware of such order.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General was scheduled to walk the gallows at one minute past Tuesday midnight for his atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.

Jamaat lawyers met Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain in a last ditch attempt to stop their leader from being hanged.

Defence lawyer Shishir Mohammad Manir told bdnews24.com that three lawyers had entered Justice Hossain’s chambers.

They included Jamaat’s chief defence counsel Razzaq and Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, a senior pro-BNP lawyer, and Tajul Islam, a key member of the Jamaat leaders’ defence.
