Readymade garment workers blocked a road in the Sadarghat area of the port city of Chittagong on Sunday morning demanding an increase in their wages.
Workers of Global Specialized Garments, associated with the Azim Group, blocked the road in Sadarghat’s Kali Bari intersection at around 9:00am, bdnews24.com Chittagong Correspondent reports.
Examinees of the Government City University College and Islamia University College were affected because of the blockade.
Workers were demanding higher wages for the past few months, a worker Mohammad Badshah told bdnews24.com.
“On Apr 1, employers had assured increased wages from Apr 4.”
Protests began after announcements were made to shut the factory on Apr 4.
Initially the blockade was on from 9:00am to 10:15am. The workers again resorted to blockade for half-an-hour from 10:45am.
Local Ward Counsellor Didadur Rahman Labhu promised the protestors that he would discuss the issue with their employers. Workers then withdrew the blockade and took position near the factory.
