Return seized Inqilab items: Court

A court here on Sunday ordered police to return the items seized from the office of the Daily Inqilab in a raid on January 16.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arefin passed the order after hearing a petition filed by a senior reporter of the vernacular daily, Afjal Bari, seeking its order to return the seized items.

On January 16, police detained four Inqilab journalists — news editor Rabiullah Rabi, deputy chief reporter Rafiq Mohammad, diplomatic correspondent Ahmed Atique and Afjal Bari — conducting a raid on its RK Mission Road office in the capital.

However, Afjal Bari was released later.

Law enforcers also sealed off the daily’s printing press, server room and seized three computers and different items during the raid.

Meanwhile, the printing press was unsealed on Saturday evening.

The raid was conducted after a case was filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act alleging that the daily published a fake and fabricated report on Thursday which tarnished the country’s image as well as the law enforcement agencies both at home and abroad.

The vernacular newspaper published the report titled ‘Assistance of Indian forces in the joint forces’ operation in Satkhira!’ in its Thursday’s issue.

Later, the newspaper authorities on its online version apologised for publishing the report.
