The High Court on Sunday declared illegal the recruitment of over 4,000 nurses holding diploma degrees by the government.
After hearing a writ petition, an HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order.
The government in 2013 recruited 4,126 diploma nurses through a gazette notification based on merits and seniority rather than following the related ordinance.
Challenging the legality of recruitment, 26 nurses holding BSc degree lodged a writ petition with the HC.
Responding to the petition, the HC stayed the recruitment of the diploma nurses and issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the recruitment process should not be declared illegal.
Following an appeal by the prosecution against the HC order, the Supreme Court stayed the HC order.
Later, Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court sent the petition to HC to dispose of following an appeal by the petitioners.
After final hearing, the HC bench declared illegal the recruitment of diploma nurses.
Petitioners’ lawyer Barrister Shakhawat Hossain said the recruitment of the diploma nurses was not done as per the laws.
