Recaptured militant Rakib killed in ‘gunfight’

Rakib Hasan, the recaptured death row militant of the banned Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladeh (JMB), has died in a “gunfight” at Mirzapur upazila, Tangail, on Monday.

Tangail police acting superintendent Hasibul Alam and Mirzapur police station Officer-in-Charge Golam Mostafa both confirmed about the death to the Dhaka Tribune.

Law enforcers were accompanying Rakib Hasan to an operation in the Beltail Ceramic area around 4:30am, Hasibul Alam said.

Miscreants opened fire on policemen and the law enforcers were compelled to fire back, he added. “Three policemen have been injured in the gunfight.”

However, the names of the injured policemen could not be obtained in primary reports.

Mirzapur police station OC Golam Mostafa confirmed about the incident.

A gun, three rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot, he added.

Rakib was recaptured on Sunday after he was snatched along with two JMB militants from a police prison van.

Miscreants snatched the three condemned JMB militants while they were being taken to Mymensingh from Kashimpur jail, Gazipur, after hurling bombs at the police van. A police constable died in the incident.

However, two remaining militants Salauddin Salehin and bomb specialist Mizan are still on the run nearly 24 hours after the attack.

The incident took place weeks after the issue of militancy surfaced anew in Bangladesh with the clip of “al-Qaeda” calling Muslims to wage Jihad against anti-Islamist forces.
