Leader of the opposition in parliament Raushan Ershad on Monday said she would make sure all the cases filed against her husband and Jatiya Party (JaPa) chairman HM Ershad are withdrawn.
“Today I promise to you that I am taking the responsibility to get the cases withdrawn. And I will do whatever needs to be done,” Raushan said at a joint meeting of the party.
Members of the party there expressed anger over the cases pending against Ershad, a former military dictator who is now special emissay of the prime minister as his Jatiya Party is in the government.
“I know how you feel. I have urged the prime minister to withdraw the cases a thousand times. But she always says that she would look into it,” she said, adding, “I know you guys feel for him. But do not forget that he is my husband. Who else will feel his pain more than I do?”
Ershad was seated on the stage when Raushan made the pledge.
The former president has Manzur killing case and a corruption case regarding procurement of radar for Biman going on against him.
In his speech as the chief guest, Ershad said, “I am overwhelmed getting all your love. I can say my life has a meaning.”
The High Court on Thursday asked the authorities concerned to dispose of the radar purchase graft case against Ershad by 31 March 2017.
The HC also asked them to record the testimonies of the rest of the witnesses in the case.
