A Chittagong court has sent the railway’s former General Manager (East Zone) Yusuf Ali Mridha to jail in two cases over irregularities in appointing staff.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mojibur Rahamn issued the order on Monday after Mridha turned himself over in court.
The judge rejected Mridha’s bail plea and sent him to jail.
The former railway GM along with other accused was indicted in these cases on Feb 5 and 19.
The court also issued arrest warrants against the accused.
Widespread irregularities and corruption in railway recruitment came to light when Tk 7 million, reportedly collected from job seekers, was found in the car of former Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta’s Assistant Personal Secretary Omar Faruq Talukder after it was stopped at Border Guard Bangladesh’s Peelkhana headquarters in the wee hours of Apr 9, 2012.
Yusuf Ali Mridha was also in the car. Later, Mridha was suspended and Talukder sacked.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed five cases on Sept 13 that year for irregularities in appointing over 1,000 employees in six different categories in Railway’s East Zone.
It pressed charges against the accused on Aug 18 last year.
