The teachers of public universities across the country will go on a strike on September 8 at their respective institutions to press home their demands that include reviewing the proposed 8th national pay scale.
The decision was made on Saturday at a general meeting of the teachers held at Teachers’ club at University of Dhaka. Later, the decision was endorsed by the vice chancellors of the universities at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University auditorium.
The general secretary of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association, Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, announced the programme after the meeting.
Maksud Kamal said the teachers of all public universities across the country will boycott classes and examinations on September 8 to realise their demands.
He also announced that a meeting with newspaper editors will take place on September 10 and a rally on September 13 at Aporajeyo Bangla of the arts building at DU.
These teachers have been protesting against national pay scale since May 14. They have placed their four-point demands that include formation of a commission to initiate an independent pay scale for the public university teachers.
The other demands seek immediate revision of the 8th national pay scale and keep senior professors and senior secretaries on the same pay scale.
Earlier, the teachers held work abstentions and organised sit-in at all public universities across the country every Sunday during August over their demands.
