The Election Commission plans to arrange polls in early May in the upazilas where the voting could not be held during the five-phase local body elections.
“We’re thinking of holding elections to the remaining upazilas in May,” Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz told reporters at his EC Secretariat office on Monday.
He said the final decision in this regard will be taken after the return of Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad from the USA.
Out of the country’s 487 upazila parishads, the commission has already held polls in 459 upazilas in five phases that concluded on March 31.
About the district council elections, the commissioner said the law has not been finalised yet. “We’ll hold the elections to the country’s district councils once the law is ready.”
Replying to a query about the long-pending election to the bifurcated Dhaka City Corporations, the commissioner said the delimitation complexities of the DCC still prevail. “Though the Election Commission repeatedly requested the Local Government Ministry, there has been no solution yet,” he added.
