‘Politics, war crimes trials complicate eradicating militancy’
He said this at ‘Reporting on Terrorism,’ organized by the CTTC and CRAB
Bangladesh’s internal politics and trial of war criminals have complicated the process of eradicating militancy, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia has said.
The DMP chief made the statement at a workshop called “Reporting on Terrorism” at the CIRDAP auditorium, in Dhaka, on Monday.
The event was organized by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police and the Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).
“Our internal politics, trials of war criminals, plus people against the liberation—and their persistent efforts to make the country unstable—add a complicated and different perspective to militancy,” he said.
“However, we have managed to forge a united stand against militancy in our ghettos,” he said.
The DMP commissioner continued: “They think that if they can establish the fear of militancy among us, then they will be able to interfere in our politics and control us.”
“Even many of our allies are trying to exert power over us as they do not take Bangladesh’s development positively,” he said, adding that these factors are playing major role—behind the scene—in why Bangladesh has not been able to eradicate militancy completely.
Asaduzzaman also opined that widespread and prolonged media coverage of the Rana Plaza collapse incident—that killed 1,134 people—also negatively impacted Bangladesh’s garment sector.
Now, foreign buyers are trying to purchase products from Bangladesh at a lower rate, citing that Bangladesh does not pay any heed or care about workers’ human rights and safety, he added.
