Police recommend action against Rony

‘Rony’s allegations have no basis’

The police on Tuesday recommended legal action against Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony as they did not find any proof of the allegations in a case filed by him against Independent Television Chairman Salman F Rahman and its two journalists.

Court sources said SI Abu Zafar of Shahbagh Police Station submitted the final report on the case to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court recommending that Salman F Rahman and the two journalists — Imtiaz Momin and Mohsin Mukul— be cleared from the charges.

The court fixed August 21 for hearing.

On July 20, Rony along with his supporters reportedly assaulted Independent TV reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul Bakul when they went to Rony’s office on the 9th floor of ‘Meherba Plaza’ at Topkhana Road in the city to verify some allegations against the MP.

They also reportedly damaged their camera before holding them hostage in a room.

Hours after the Independent Television authorities ruling party MP Golam Maula Rony, he filed a counter-case against Salman F Rahman, one of the owners of the TV channel, and others on charge of attempting to kill him and trying to extort money from him.

Police arrested Rony on July 24 on charge of assaulting the two journalists. A Dhaka court on July 25 sent him to jail rejecting his bail prayer.
