In a scathing attack on opposition leader Khaleda Zia, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said the opposition has unleashed a reign of terror across the country in the name of movement.
“In the name of movement, they (opposition) have been committing destructive activities like killings, arson and making attacks on temples of the minority communities, AL leaders and workers,” she said.
The Prime Minister, who is also the President of the ruling Awami League, came up with the remarks in her introductory speech at the Awami League Advisory Council meeting at Ganobhaban in the evening.
Sheikh Hasina alleged that the opposition BNP joining hands with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami are carrying out atrocities on the minority communities and attacking the police across the country.
“BNP’s character is like that. They set fire to even mosques if they feel it necessary. What type of Islam do they follow? They start chanting slogans before completing prayers,” Hasina said referring to recent processions brought out from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Jum’a prayers.
The Prime Minister said the opposition has been carrying out destructive activities across the country one after another, and the opposition leader will have to shoulder the responsibility for that.
About the Liberation War spirit, Sheikh Hasina said Khaleda Zia is basically against the country’s independence and she feels discomfort when it comes to the Liberation War.
Accusing Khaleda Zia of harboring killers and terrorists, the premier said they are talking about forming a tribunal if they are voted to power. “But they’ll have to try the criminal offences they are now committing and those they had committed after 2001.”
“Today, they (BNP) are going against the country’s independence and the Liberation War spirit by siding with the war criminals,” the Awami League president told the meeting.
She went on: “When we’re trying to take the country forward with our relentless efforts, they are taking it backward with their destructive activities.”
The Prime Minister said Khaleda has gone mad after her return from Singapore as her government taken back the siphoned off money of Khaleda’s son from that country.
