Plot on to hold voter-less dramatic polls: Dr Kamal

Gano Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain on Friday alleged that a plot is on to hold a ‘dramatic election’ without voters in a bid to destroy parliamentary democracy.

“A dramatic and voter-less election like those held in 1986 and 1996 is looming large,” he said while addressing the extended meeting of his party’s central committee at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).

Dr Kamal, also a noted jurist, described the just-formed all-party government as the first episode of the drama, saying Jatiya Party chairman Ershad was wooed on promise to make JP the opposition for holding the ‘dramatic election’ without BNP.

Observing that the Awami League-led grand alliance has become a grand chaos through the participation of Jatiya Party in the all-party government, he posed a question, “Is there any provision for it (all-party government) in the Constitution?”

Kamal Hossain also observed that terms — ‘politics of division’, ‘politics of extortion’, ‘politics of tender business’ and ‘nomination business’ are gaining currency in the country in recent times against the norms of democracy.

“A politics of division is evident. We see attempts to do politics of division by using religion,” he said.

Participated by party district level members, the extended meeting of Gano Forum was conducted by its general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Mintu.
