People won’t accept one-sided polls: Ershad

Efforts on to destroy Grameen Bank, he says

Airing doubt whether there will be any timely election, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad said here on Friday that  people would not accept any attempt to hold the next polls without the participation of all political parties.

“There’s uncertainty whether the election will be held in time. The people of the country won’t accept the election if it is held without the participation of all parties. Such election won’t have the credibility either,” he said.

The former President also said the country has plunged into a severe crisis and there is a need for bringing about changes in the election system to restore peace and stability in the country. “If not, the two parties (AL and BNP) will push the country into further destruction.”

The JP chief was addressing a rally at New Field in the district with district JP president and Presidium member Atiqur Rahman Atique in the chair.

Ershad said the entire country is now jolted due to political crisis and the wheel of the economy remains dysfunctional. “Even, there’s no security of public life and property.”

He criticised the government for corruption in Padma Bridge project, share market manipulation and terrorists acts by Chhatra League-Juba League activists.

On Grameen Bank issue, he said there are efforts to destroy the bank which brought laurel for the country through winning the Nobel Prize. “Nobel winner Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus is being harassed and humiliated. The Grameen Bank is being politicised. I strongly protest the role of the government over the Grameen Bank.”

About the election, he said, “This is probably my last election. I’ll get the vote if you cast your vote in favour of my candidate. I seek your vote as before. I hope you won’t deprive me of it.”
