Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday said the foreign buyers have expressed their concerns over the recent building collapse at Savar that killed over 380 people.
Their concerns were conveyed to the exporters association.
“The foreign buyers have also expressed their concerns over the recent fire at Tazreen factory and the overall safety scenario in RMG sector in Bangladesh,” BGMEA President Atiqul Islam told reporters after a meeting with the buyers.
More than 110 workers died when Tazreen Fashions factory caught fire in November last year.
Islam claimed that the apparel exporters’ association was relentlessly working to ensure proper treatment of those injured in the country’s worst building collapse case.
“The injured workers will be sent abroad for treatment if needed,” he said.
He said BGMEA had already provided Enam Medical College Hospital Tk 1 million for the treatment of the injured.
He also sought everyone’s support to keep the garment factories open.
The nine-storey building used to house five garment factories. Thousands of workers were in the building when it crushed.
Meanwhile, the police arrested and took in remand all the factory owners along with the owner of the building, Sohel Rana, who claimed to be a Senior Joint Convenor of Juba League of Savar municipality unit.
All the factories at Savar and Ashulia remained closed for a day after the workers took to the streets on Monday to press for capital punishment for those responsible for their colleagues’ deaths.
