One to walk the gallows in Dhamrai killing case

The court also acquitted eight other accused in the case as they were not found guilty

A Dhaka speedy trial tribunal yesterday sentenced one person to death and six others to life term imprisonment for killing a Dhamrai resident in 2012.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman pronounced the verdict in the afternoon.

Abdur Rashid (absconding) was sentences to death while Md Rafiqul Hasan Moksed, Md Biplob (absconding), Siddiqur Rahman, Md Monir and Asaduzzaman Asad and Md Rajon (absconding) were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Court also finned Tk20,000 each of life timers and the failure to pay the fine would render them another year of imprisonment.

The court also acquitted eight other accused in the case as they were not found guilty.

The acquitted were Md Masud, Shamsul Alam, Jahangir Alam, Khorshed Alam, Md Sujon, Md Shaju, Lal Chan, and Hasib alias Ashib.

On March 6, 2012, Nazmul Huda Panna was killed by the convicts regarding a union parishad post-election conflict.

Rafiqul Hasan Moksed, who was a chairman candidate for Chowhat union parishad election, had disputes with his rival candidate Nazrul Islam over the election.

Following the dispute, the convicts led by Moksed stabbed Panna, who was a supporter of chairman candidate Nazrul Islam, leaving him seriously injured beside the Bangshi river while he was coming back home from Balia Bazar.

The victim was rushed to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar where doctors pronounced him dead.

Panna’s wife Hasu Begum lodged a murder case with Dhamrai police station the following day.
