No reason for Shipping Minister to quit: Quader

Defending Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan over the tragic Pinak-6 launch capsize incident, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said there is no reason for the minister to resign over the matter.

“What happened was unfortunate …although there has been marked development in the shipping sector, the sector still has some limitations,” he told reporters after a meeting at the Secretariat on upgrading Joydevepur-Chandra-Tangail-Elange road into a four-lane one.

“If there’s any negligence of duty from the side of ‘Inspector’, the Shipping Minister will take necessary action. However, the government can’t avoid responsibility for the launch capsize incident,” he said.

Over the rising incidents of road crashes, particularly during and after Eid, Quader said the number of road accidents has increased as the roads have turned smooth due to renovation works.

He said actions will be taken to reduce accidents in some accident-prone areas, including Dhaka-Aricha highway.

Over the upgradation work on Joydevepur-Chandra-Tangail-Elange road, Quader said the work on the road will begin at the end of December.

He said the work on the Tk 3066.80-crore project will be completed in 2018. – See more at:
