N’ganj 7 murders: Probe body grills 8 police officers

The seven-member enquiry committee on Tuesday interrogated eight police officials in connection with sensational seven murders.

 

The committee formed at the directives of the High Court to investigate the sensational murders started quizzing the cops at 3:30pm at the local Circuit House in the city.

 

Earlier, the committee headed by additional secretary of the public administration ministry Shahjahan Ali Mollah grilled four other police officials in the sensational murders.

 

The 12 police officers were on a 12-member probe body formed by police after the abduction of Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others.

 

The eight officers who were quizzed on Tuesday are additional superintendents of police Sajjadur Rahman, Shahidul Islam (withdrawn) and Md Zakaria, and assistant superintendents of police Azim Ul Ahsan (circle-A), Kanti Sarkar (Circle-B), Inspector of Special Branch Moinur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Model Police Station Monzur Kader and ASP of Fatullah Police station Abdullah Al Masum.

 

Earlier on Monday, three progress reports on investigation into the seven murders were submitted to the Attorney General office to place those before the High Court following an order of the court.

 

The progress reports were submitted from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the seven-member enquiry committee.

 

On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.

 

Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya River on April 30. Besides, the following day, the body of Jahangir, car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the river.

 

Later, Shahidul Islam, Nazrul’s father-in-law that Rab officials killed Nazrul and others in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councilor Nur Hossain, prime accused in the murder case, and other accomplices.

 

The three former officials of Rab-11 in Narayanganj –Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Navy’s Lt Commander MM Rana — were forced to retirement for their alleged involvement in the incident.

 

They are now on police remand.
