N’ganj-5 by-polls: Nagarik Parishad demands army deployment

Narayanganj Nagarik Parishad, a body formed to campaign for independent candidate SM Akram in the Narayanganj-5 by-polls, on Saturday demanded army deployment to ensure fair election.

It made the demand at a press conference at Narayanganj Press Club.

While reading out a written statement, Mahbubur Rahman Masum, chief election agent of SM Akram, said supporters of Jatiya Party candidate AKM Salim Osman are terrorising voters ahead of the election slated for June 26.

Miscreants and outsiders have reportedly brought out processions in support of Salim Osman at Fatullah, he alleged.

Besides, Salim’s brother Shamim Osman, MP from Narayanganj-4 constituency, has already violated the electoral codes of conduct, Masum added. “Although specific allegations regarding violation of the rules were raised to the returning officer, no action has been taken.”

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party MP Nasim Osman on April 30.
