Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the upcoming parliament election in Bangladesh will strengthen the country’s democracy and the Constitution.
She emphasised on a culture of democratic transition of power in Bangladesh upholding the Constitution.
Her Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed newsmen on Tuesday after Hasina’s meeting with Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma at Hotel Grand Hyatt on Monday.
Azad quoted Hasina as telling Sharma that there had been nearly 6,000 polls under the incumbent government in which many opposition-backed candidates won.
In fact, all the city corporation polls under her government have been won by the Opposition, beginning Chittagong in 2010.
Hasina said none had questioned the fairness of the elections and that the parliament polls would also be free and fair.
The 15th constitutional amendment rules out establishment of a caretaker before the forthcoming election.
Hasina says the polls will be held keeping in mind the existing constitutional provisions.
The Opposition has been on a spree of street protests demanding restoration of the non-party caretaker government system to supervise the polls.
Hasina has ruled it out.
The Commonwealth Secretary General invited the Prime Minister to the conference of the head of states of the Commonwealth countries to be held in November in Sri Lanka.
