MP charged in court for shooting child

But the Awami League MP Manjurul Islam Liton secured permanent bail on Sunday afternoon in the case initiated by the child’s father.

Liton was present in court when Gaibandha’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Moinul Hasan Yusuf approved his bail appeal, said his counsel Sirajul Islam.

The same court on Mar 7 had granted the MP anticipatory bail until Sunday.

Shahadat Hossain Sourav, a fourth-grader, was walking with his uncle Shahjahan Ali when Liton allegedly opened fire from his car at Sundarganj Upazila’s Gopalcharan on Oct 2 last year.

Sourav’s father Saju Mia started the case with Sundarganj police the next day accusing the Gaibandha-1 MP.

The case’s investigation officer Inspector Abu Haider Md Ashrafuzzaman said he submitted the chargesheet against Liton in court on Apr 1.

Court police’s Inspector Enamul Haque said the case has been transferred to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Gaibandha and the next hearing will be held on May 15.

Police arrested the MP from Dhaka’s Uttara on Oct 14 and sent him to Gaibandha the following day.

A court had then denied him bail and sent him to jail. But he secured bail and was released on Nov 8.
