More Nayan Bonds in the offing if patrons go unpunished

It was half past eight in the morning when Nayan Bond’s body was brought to Barguna General Hospital morgue. Around 1500 people thronged the hospital premises to see Nayan who had died in an alleged gunfight with police the previous night.

Some of them were skeptical, saying that it is certainly not the end of people like Nayan causing problems. They feel such Nayan Bonds will torment the society time and again if their patrons are not brought to justice.

Locals said that even some of the patrons of Nayan Bond are now very happy after his death.

Nayan, along with some others, indiscriminately hacked a youth named Rifat Sharif to death in broad day light on 26 June.

Faruk Sikder, a councilor of Barguna municipality’s Ward 9, was among the spectators in the morgue.

He hoped that Nayan’s patrons would also be brought to book so that no such criminals dare to commit such henious crimes.

Otherwise, he thinks, new Bonds would surface again.

Shahidul Islam, councilor of Ward 4, also echoed the same.

Superintendent of Barguna police Maruf Hossain told Prothom Alo, “Arresting all the accused in Rifat murder case is our top priority. We are trying our best.”

Locals said Nayan’s rise as a criminal does not date long back. He got involved with criminal activities after passing higher secondary examinations in 2013.

Since 2017, Nayan, with the backing of a powerful man, started drug dealings, extortion and illegal motorcycle business.

He was arrested with Heroin and Yaba pills in the same year and was in jail for two months. He also formed a criminal gang named ‘007’ with the local youths.

Ruling party student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) district unit president Jubayer Adnan and general secretary Tanvir Hossain at a press conference on 28 April 2018 alleged that Nayan Bond is an associate of Awami League MP Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu’s son Sunam Debnath.

Nayan is known to be a close ally of Sunam in the political arena of Barguna.

Sunam, who is also science and technology affairs secretary of district unit AL, however, denied the allegation and termed it all negative propaganda by his political rivals.
