Modasser confesses to Sonali visit

The prime minister’s Health Adviser Modasser Ali on Wednesday admitted that he had visited the Hotel Ruposhi Bangla branch of Sonali Bank several times ‘mistakenly’.

“On request of my relative in the bank I visited the bank several times. And my relative introduced me with Hall-Mark group MD Tanvir Mahnud Tanvir to blackmail me intentionally,” Modasser said before a parliamentary sub-committee during a two-hour interrogation at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The parliamentary standing committee on finance on September 3 formed a three-member sub-committee led by Awami League MP Tazul Islam to investigate the Hall-Mark loan scam.

“The adviser (Modasser) acknowledged us that he visited the Sonali Bank’s Ruposi Bangla branch in ‘good faith’ when audit was going on to investigate the Hall-Mark scam,” Tazul told this correspondent quoting the adviser as saying.

Tazul also said the sub-committee is almost at the end of finalising their probe report on the much-talked about scam of taking Tk 3.5 crore as loan by Hall-Mark Group and five other companies on forged documents.

The committee is set to hold meeting with Bangladesh Bank governor and finance ministry’s (Bank Division) concerned officials on Thursday and finalise its report with observation and recommendations, Tazul added.
