Mayor Ivy upset

The bodies of Narayanganj city Councillor Nazrul Islam and five others were recovered at Bandar Upazila in efforts stretching from afternoon to 6pm on Wednesday — three days after seven people, including Nazrul, were kidnapped in broad daylight in Narayanganj.

Locals at Kalagachhiya first noticed two bloated bodies floating amid water hyacinth near the river banks in the afternoon and informed the police. The law enforcers then launched a search operation, and found four more bodies floating in the river by the evening.

Later, the relatives identified the bodies.

The bodies were directly sent to Narayanganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy, and Mayor Ivy was present there.

She told bdnews24.com around 9pm, “We’ve been waiting for three hours, but no magistrate has come to record the condition of the bodies.”

She was trying to pacify the angry supporters of councillor Nazrul Islam.

“What is the deputy commissioner doing? The people here have got angry. I cannot calm them down anymore.”

Ivy was speaking to someone on her mobile phone. “Why aren’t you coming? I cannot calm the people here,” she was heard saying.

When Executive Magistrate Abul Kashem Mohammad Shahin reached the morgue around 10pm, the angry people swore at him. He then entered the morgue accompanied by police.

Ivy had her doubts about the administration’s role and said the dwellers of Narayanganj were gripped by the fear of abduction in the wake of recurring incidents.

Asked who she thought were responsible for the killings, Ivy said, “It’s very clear who committed this. The victim’s family has already filed a lawsuit.”

Awami League leader and councillor Nazrul’s wife, Selina Islam Beauty, alleged on Sunday that the ruling Awami League’s Siddhirganj thana unit Vice President Nur Hossain and General Secretary Hazi Mohammad Yasin had masterminded the crime.

Hossain is also the councillor of the Ward No 4 of Narayanganj City Corporation.

Nazrul’s family filed a case against Hossain, Yasin and a few others on Monday.

Preparation was under way for holding the namaz-e-janaza of the six people at the city corporation ground at night.
