Masih doesn’t belong to JP: Ershad

“He doesn’t have any relations with my party,” Ershad told an Iftar programme in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Ershad said Masih was a member of his party but he had later resigned.

Former JP Presidium member Masih was expelled from the party on Oct 30 last year over row over Union Bank share.

Another top JP leader Kazi Zafar Ahmed was expelled from the party over contesting the Jan 5 general election. He had floated a breakaway faction of JP on Dec 20 last year.

Masih joined the faction as its secretary general but resigned within two months and started working as Raushon’s political secretary.

JP emerged as the second biggest party in the 10th national polls boycotted by the BNP and its allies.

Raushon became the Opposition Leader in Parliament while Ershad was made the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy.

The Opposition Leader did not attend Wednesday’s Iftar programme though she was invited.

Party leaders say Raushon proposed Masih as a candidate for the Narayanganj-5 by-poll but Ershad opposed.

When asked about Ershad’s sudden announcement about Masih, a presidium member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a national daily had recently ran a report that the JP secretary general was forming district unit committees as per his whims.

“The report contained Masih statement saying the party secretary general did not consult the opposition leader over the matters.

“Neither the party chief nor the secretary general took the statement lightly,” he told bdnews24.com.

Masih could not be reached over phone.

Speaking at the Iftar programme, Ershad said, “I am Jatiya Party chairman. None can work as per their whims.

“No committee is either formed or dissolved without my permission.”
