Opposition acting chief whip Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Tuesday in Parliament demanded judicial inquiry into the ‘Reshma rescue’ issue that sparked controversies both at home and abroad.

Anee, a BNP lawmaker elected from Laxmipur-3 constituency, claimed that the ‘rescue drama’ was staged as per the government plan and demanded arrest of those who were involved in the claimed rescue operation of Reshma through investigation.

Referring to the report in a foreign daily, he said: “The (rescue) drama tarnished the image of the country and army. The government in a planned way staged the drama to hide its corruption, misrule and mass killing during the drive against Hefajat-men.”

The BNP lawmaker said the government should always remain alert so that nobody could hurt the country’s image. “We’re ashamed of such an incident.”

Sewing machinist Reshma Begum was pulled from the rubble 17 days after the factory collapsed, but now a fellow worker, according to foreign media report, claims she escaped with him in the day of the disaster.

In reply, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury alleged that the opposition is spreading such an issue in a bid to undermine the army and make them controversial.

“The money that has been laundered is now being spent for paid news aboard,” she said.

The senior treasury bench lawmaker said the army men are patriotic and they would give befitting reply to such allegations.
