rmg-clash

Garments workers clash with law enforcers at Mirpur-13 in the capital on Monday. They went violent from a rally demanding increase of their wage.

Garment makers have decided to close all factories in Ashulia near the capital for an indefinite period from Tuesday due to continued labour unrest over the last few days.

Only the factories in Ashulia area would remain closed for an indefinite period while the production in other areas would continue, Reaz Bin Mahmood Sumon, vice-president of BGMEA, told The Daily Star on Monday.

“Production in most of the ready-made garment (RMG) factories in Ashulia had been suspended over the last 12 days for the labour unrest,” he said.

The leader of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association also said the workers did not join the work over the last 12 days and they staged demonstrations on the streets without any reason.

“The workers demonstrated and vandalised some factories in Ashulia area today even after the announcement of a fresh wage board for the workers by the government Sunday,” Sumon said.

As a result, the BGMEA fearing a massive labour unrest has decided to close down all the factories in Ashulia area. The BGMEA announced it at a press briefing at its office on Monday.
