Khaleda to sit with party policymakers Saturday

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is going to sit with her party’s standing committee members on Saturday night to discuss the country’s latest political situation and finalise the line of action to force the government to instate the caretaker government system.

The meeting with the party policymakers is scheduled to start at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office around 8:30pm, her press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told UNB.

She will hold another meeting with the top leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance at her Gulshan office on Sunday night, he added.

After a long pause due to Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, the BNP chief is going to meet the party policymakers and alliance leaders to work out their next course of action to compel the government to arrange the next polls under a non-party administration.

Party sources said the BNP standing committee and alliance leaders are unlikely to go for any harsher programme this month. Before taking the decisive line of action, the central leaders, including Khaleda Zia, will carry out a mass campaign across the country to make ready party leaders and activists for a vigorous movement from mid-September.

BNP policymakers are likely to suggest the party chief holding public meetings in some districts near Dhaka and a few divisional cities to drum up public support in favour of their movement.

On completion of the mass campaign programme, the party will gradually intensify its movement with harsher programmes like hartal, blockade and noncooperation, the sources added.

Apart from the next election movement strategies, the party policymakers will also elaborately discuss the party’s stance if the International Crimes Tribunal-1 pronounces verdict on a war crime case against BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, party insiders said.
