Khaleda not under house arrest: MKA

Cops deployed at her residence for security reason, he says

Denying the opposition’s allegation that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been kept under the house arrest, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Sunday said law enforcers have been deployed around her house for security reason.

“We have information that some of the angry relatives of those killed in recent hartals might launch an attack on the house of Khaleda Zia. That’s why security has been beefed up around her residence as it’s our responsibility to ensure her (Khaleda’s) security,” he said.

The home boss was replying to a query as to whether the leader of the opposition has been kept under house arrest or would be arrested.

Asked whether the arrest of top five BNP leaders would hamper the dialogue between the government and the opposition, MK Alamgir replied in the negative, saying, “This is totally a different issue.”

Replying to another question whether the Parliament Speaker was informed before the arrest of two BNP MPs — Barrister Moudud Ahmed and MK Anwar, he said, “I think the Speaker is aware of the matter.”

Observing that no one is above the law, the home minister said action will be taken under the existing criminal law against those who were involved in killing people, arson attacks and looting valuables during hartal.

About the action to be taken against the arrested BNP leaders, he said they were produced before the court within 24 hours and the court will take decision about it.
