The elite force is now being used for political purposes, the BNP chief says
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has demanded abolishing Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the elite force which was formed under her rule in 2004.
“RAB was formed to control law and order during BNP rule,” she told the media on Sunday. “But now it is being used for political purposes.”
“This force is involved with killings and abductions. That is why there is no need to continue this force. Now the people want to see the back of it,” she said.
Khaleda came up with the demand during a visit to missing BNP leader Sajedul Haque Sumon’s residence to express sympathy to his family members.
“The objective of RAB was violated in every step. Instead of ensuring security for the people, it has taken a position against the people,” she alleged.
The BNP chief demanded a probe into the mechanism of RAB and its functions and said it could be dissolved. “Another elite force can be formed from within the police.”
Since the journey of the RAB, widespread criticism raised from inside and outside of the country regarding its alleged involved in extrajudicial killings.
A few days ago, allegations rose regarding its involvement in the abductions and killings of Narayanganj in exchange of money. Three RAB officials were dismissed over the allegations.
Khaleda demanded fair investigation of the killings and abductions and demanded trial of the culprits. She also demanded immediate trace on the missing people.
