Dhaka district’s Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman revealed their suspicion at a press briefing at DMP media centre on Friday after arresting seven people for their alleged involvement in the murders.

He said, “All arrestees, including deceased Saju Ahmed, are members of a gang of robbers. They earlier robbed a house at Nawabganj . The murders mainly took place over the share of the loots.”

Blindfolded bodies of a couple and their two children, with their hands and legs tied, were found in a first-floor apartment of a six-storey building in South Keraniganj’s Kadampur on Wednesday morning.

The deceased were Saju, 35, his wife Rajia Begum, 26, son ‘Imran’, 5, and daughter ‘Sanjida’, 3.

Police unveiled their identities a day later after questioning that building’s caretaker, ‘Sohel’, and one ‘Akkas’, who helped Saju rent the apartment, and checking different documents found on that apartment.

On Thursday night, police nabbed seven people from Gazipur, Munshiganj and Keraniganj respectively during separate raids.

SP Habibur Rahman said the raids were led by Additional SP Monalisa Begum and ASP Qazi Maskuda Lima.

The arrestees are – Rani Begum, Mukta Begum, Shahida Begum, ‘Rafiq’, Abdul Majid, ‘Sumon’, and ‘Jony’.

Of them, Sumon was arrested from Gazipur, Jony and Majid from Munshiganj and the rest were arrested from two places in Keraniganj.

SP Rahman told reporters that Saju were having extramarital affairs with the wives of Rafiq and Jony. “This could be a motive for the murders too. But we’ll know for sure after interrogations.”

Based on preliminary questioning, he said Rafiq and Sumon carried out the murders and the three women helped them escape.

They were also following police investigation and movement, he added.

ASP Monalisa Begum told bdnews24.com that Saju was a rickshaw puller once in Dhaka. Later he worked as an assistant of a truck driver. He started driving truck three years ago after getting a driving license, which was recovered from his house.

“At some point, he became an active member of the robber gang because of his greed for money.”

Meanwhile, Saju’s elder brother Bashir Uddin on Thursday night identified the bodies of his brother and family at the morgue of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital. The bodies were later handed over to him.

Bashir also lodged a case with South Keraniganj Police Station accusing unknown miscreants over the murders.
