JU VC kept confined for 2nd day

Teachers of Jahangirnagar University under the banner of ‘Sadharon Shikkhak Forum’ take position in the hallway in front of Vice Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain’s office on Thursday confining him from August 21 demanding his resignation.

Around 40 Jahangirnagar University teachers kept Vice-Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain confined to his office for the second straight day Thursday demanding his resignation or removal.

The teachers, under the Sadharon Shikkhak Forum banner, are also on the third day of their three-day strike as classes and exams remain suspended.

The VC sent a fax from confinement to President Abdul Hamid at about 2:00pm, seeking his interference as the chancellor of the university to resolve the current situation.

On Wednesday, the agitating teachers complained that the VC did not expel JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Rajib Ahmed Rasel even though “he had assaulted” a teacher on April 6.

They also accused the VC of being involved in anomalies in the admission process and teachers’ appointments, ruining the campus environment by taking up unnecessary projects, and misusing university funds.

On July 24, the High Court, in response to a petition filed by four teachers and a student, had directed the JU authorities to immediately take necessary steps for the uninterrupted continuation of JU’s day-to-day functions.

Since April 27, Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (Juta) had been demanding that the VC be removed in connection with his inaction following the assault of the teacher.

Juta withdrew its agitation programmes on July 30 but the Sadharon Shikkhak Forum was formed and the agitation continued.
